Grounding Your Energy to the Earth: The Ancient Wisdom of Earthing Meets Modern Science

If you’ve ever took off your shoes and felt an instant wave of calm wash over you as your feet sank into warm sand or soft grass… you’ve already tasted the magic of grounding (also called earthing).  Every Sarasota Vortex Tour features forest bathing with bare feet in preparation for connecting with the Vortex.

A Vortex Tour is more than hiking—we connect to nature. We pause on the trails of Myakka River State Park or Oscar Scherer State Park, slip off our shoes, and let the Earth’s living energy flow straight into our bodies. It’s one of the simplest, most profound practices we share, and today I want to dive deep into why it works—both from the spiritual perspective that’s been known for millennia and from the peer-reviewed science that’s now catching up.

What Is Grounding / Earthing, Really?

Grounding is the practice of making direct, skin-to-earth contact—most commonly by walking barefoot on grass, sand, soil, or even concrete (but NOT asphalt). The idea is that the Earth carries a subtle negative electrical charge, and when we touch it, we absorb free electrons that help balance and restore our own bio-electric field. The inorganic materials in our shoes usually block a direct connection with the energy field.

Spiritually, this is ancient wisdom:
  • Indigenous cultures worldwide have always known the Earth as a living, healing being.  (Nature Connection and First Nation People). Think of an energy vortex as the connective tissue between Earth and Human lifeforce energies.

  • In energy work and chakra traditions of the East, the feet are our direct link to the root chakra—our anchor of safety, stability, and life-force energy.  (Everything You Need to Know About the Root Chakra). The soles of our feet are portals where the vortex spirals around our spine.

  • Many describe the sensation as “discharging” built-up stress, emotional static, or “heavy energy” while drawing in the pure, stabilizing frequency of the planet called the Schumann resonance, Earth’s natural 7.83 Hz pulse. (The Healing Power of Sound: Science of Music and Vibration in Health). Remember this, and picture this when you are basking in the Vortex. The Earth wants to work with us. She unconditionally loves and accepts us.

Earthing is like plugging your body into the ultimate power source—except this one also calms your nervous system, clears your mind, and reconnects you to something much bigger than yourself.

There’s 2 main ways to do it:
  1. Touch your bare skin to the bare Earth. This method costs zero dollars. You just need a safe space. Public Land is an ideal resource because they are often less contaminated by toxins such as herbicide/pesticide, and dog poop.

  2. Use modern technology like grounding shoes or grounding mats/sheets for sleeping. There is an industry emerging to sell you products that mimic something nature provides for free. Just consider that

The Science That Backs the Spirit

For years, the benefits of barefoot time were dismissed as “woo-woo.” Then researchers started measuring what actually happens in the body. The results are stunning—and they beautifully support the spiritual understanding that direct contact with the Earth restores balance, reduces “dis-ease,” and reconnects us to our natural state.

In 2015, Oschman, Chevalier & Brown published findings in the Journal of Inflammation Research that grounding dramatically lowers inflammation. The researchers explain that free electrons from the Earth act as natural antioxidants, neutralizing positively charged free radicals that cause chronic inflammation.

“Our main hypothesis is that connecting the body to the Earth enables free electrons from the Earth’s surface to spread over and into the body, where they can have antioxidant effects.”

They also documented faster wound healing and reduced pain. The researchers used phrases like, “living matrix” to describe our body’s electromagnetic system (which is also a foundational concept in acupuncture) and needing to plug into “the “battery for all planetary life.”

10 years later, Korean researchers built upon that study with a larger sample size and found the similar benefits! Grounding improves sleep by reducing stress and insomnia.

Multiple studies have concluded that earthing improves sleep, reduces pain, and shifts the autonomic nervous system from “fight-or-flight” to “rest-and-digest.”

Participants who slept grounded showed normalized cortisol rhythms (that pesky stress hormone) and reported deeper, more restorative sleep—something we hear constantly from guests who try barefoot grounding during our tours.

In short: science is showing that the spiritual practice of “grounding your energy” has a measurable biological mechanism—electrons from the Earth literally recharging and protecting your body.

Why This Matters in Sarasota’s Vortex Landscapes

Our local parks sit on some of Florida’s most potent energy centers. When your toes touch the soil and leaves, you’re not just getting electrons—you’re also tuning into the subtle vortex energies that make this area so special. The combination is pure magic: science + spirit in real time.

How to Start Grounding Today

  1. 30 minutes barefoot in your yard, at the beach, or on a park trail. Resting or moving.

  2. Morning or sunset is ideal—when Earth’s surface charge is strongest.

  3. During our tours — we always build in intentional barefoot time so you can feel the difference right away.

Ready to Feel It for Yourself?

The next time life feels heavy, chaotic, or just “off,” remember: the Earth is always there, ready to take the charge and give you back balance. “Go touch grass” is not just a sarcastic refrain for the digital addict, but an invitation for primal healing.

Restore nature connection on a Sarasota Vortex Tour. Small groups, beautiful trails, and guided moments of barefoot grounding that people say change how they move through the world.

Book your spot at srqvortex.com — I can’t wait to walk barefoot with you.
